Sam and Gary Edmonds lap it up in Sri Lanka

Sam and Gary Edmonds lap it up in Sri Lanka

At Gamefishing Asia, there’s nothing better than a trip report written by our clients. Here is the one of Sam & Gary who come fishing with us in Sri Lanka and had a really good trip over December – January. Personally, I enjoyed guiding them as they were always keen to give differents techniques a try, always happy to take some advice from their guide and had a never give up attitude!!! We hope to see you again in Lanka for another good trip and next time you will have your revenge on jigging with the big doggie you lost. Nico Full fishing Tour in Sri Lanka for Sam & Gary Back in March last year, my family and I booked up a fishing holiday with Sportquest and Gamefishing Asia to Sri Lanka. We had researched the fishing in many countries and had been looking for a trip that would give us a great chance of bumping up our species lists, and at the same time, a good chance of catching some big fish on lures, such as the Giant Trevally. The one species that really swayed our decision to go to Sri Lanka in the end was the Clown Knifefish, known in Sri Lanka as the Featherback, which was a fish Dad and I had been dreaming of catching. Sri Lanka looked like a beautiful country to visit and try for these, as well as many other species. Round 1 in Kirinda with good topwater and light jigging action We flew out on the 18th December, staying for Christmas and New Year, with five days fishing, guided by...
The Vikings are back in Kirinda

The Vikings are back in Kirinda

It was with great pleasure that I welcomed back Michael, Per and Per, plus one of their friends who joined them for this 2nd trip in Kirinda. Their previous trip was a success. Only Michael didn’t enjoy the first trip fully, due to a pain in the shoulder. But for this trip, Michael was ready; no more problems with his shoulder, a new rod and a large range of GT lures. The first two days, the fishing was tough. The fish weren’t keen on biting, but all the same, the guys took some fish. On the 3rd day, by the end of the afternoon, the fish woke up and the guys caught several GTs with multiple hook ups. From my experience, I knew that at any time a big one would come. This is exactly what happened when Per hooked a big GT with his Master Bomb Patriot Design popper. The fish took the current and put up a strong fight for Per. And this was finally a monster GT that Per landed, his biggest GT ever. After a quick picture, we released the fish and went back to the reef. On the next drift, I spotted a school of baits, just on the edge of the reef and I asked Michael to cast his Hammer Head G-cup close to them. On the 3rd pop, a huge GT came up but missed the lure. On the same drift, a big Spanish mackerel jumped on Per’s popper but missed it. The reef was on fire! I made a new drift and Per had his revenge and hooked another big GT....
Kirinda First Group of Season 2016-17

Kirinda First Group of Season 2016-17

We started off our 2016-17 season with a Single Angler group that comprised 4 anglers – Andrew and Edmond from Dubai, Gary from Abu Dhabi and Alexandre, a French angler who has fished with us before in Trincomalee and had come in from Shanghai. All the guys had fished GTs before and were aware of their chances of landing the prize fish. I met the guys the evening of their arrival, at their hotel in Kirinda, and they peppered me with questions about the fishing, the sea and the weather conditions. They listened patiently while I discussed the strategies we would need to employ considering all conditions that might prevail. I mentioned to them that when conditions are choppy GT’s are more active and the chances for raising large GT’s are greater. On the first day, we reached our fishing spot in less than 45 minutes. On the first drift, I spotted a nice bait ball on the reef drop off; Edmond cast his popper near to the ball and we had the first strike of the trip. On the next drift, around the same bait ball, we had a double hook up and Edmond and Gary were off to a great start. From then on the fish were more and more active and all the anglers were casting for the big one. With the action getting hotter, Gary had a serious bite on his stickbait; the fish took lots of line and fought hard, the Yamaga rod taking a nice curve. We waited while Gary battled it out, eager to see this fish; finally, it was a black GT,...
Big Barra & Featherback

Big Barra & Featherback

I picked up Brian & John from their hotel in Colombo early in the morning. They are from UK and had come to Sri Lanka for a couple of days to support their sons who were playing rugby in a friendly match with a local team. An hour later we reached the Villa and after a coffee we headed out on the lake. We started fishing at our Mangrove Jack spots. It was really windy and the conditions were not ideal so after casting for a while we moved to the Barramundi spots. There were lots of small bait jumping and we saw a big swirl. The guys cast in the area but unfortunately nothing come to bite theirs lures. Around 11 am, I decide to try our Featherback spots. The fish are there – rolling on surface. Brian & John are so excited to see some fish. I change their lures for models that the Featherbck find more attractive and after few cast Brian has a bite. The fish takes some line but the hook comes off. The Featherback appear active. Two casts later Brian has another bite and this time the fish is well hooked. The fish makes a couple of jumps and finishes in the landing net. Quick picture and we release the fish. I show John where to cast and give him some tips on how to retrieve his lure. On the third cast, he is on with a Featherback and he lands it. John is so happy. Later, Brian has another bite but the fish comes off. After that John has a bite and...
Su Lin fishing at Bolgoda Lake

Su Lin fishing at Bolgoda Lake

I picked up Su Lin from her hotel in Colombo early in the morning and we headed for Bolgoda Lake. She had come to Sri Lanka to meet one of her friend who lives in Colombo and like a true angler she was looking for some fishing. She found us on Facebook and booked a day’s fishing. On the way she asked me a lot of question about the fish she could catch on the day. I told her about guiding some Japanese anglers a few days ago and they had good action with the elusive featherback. Su Lin was excited & eager to catch one. The boat was waiting for us at the Villa when we arrived and we headed out to fish. We started on a nice spot, a structure where the tide current was strong and offers a perfect place for a Barramundi or a feisty Mangrove Jack. After a few casts Su Lin caught a Giant Herring, her first one and she was surprised by the strength of this fish compared with its size. After that, we tried some other spots for Barramundi but nothing came. I decided to head to the spot where we had caught Featherback with our last group. When we arrived, we saw some fish rolling on surface but nothing compared with last time. Anyway, Su Lin tried and after some casts she caught a Mangrove Jack. We stayed a while till lunch time and then headed to the Villa where the cook has prepared a nice Sri Lankan rice and curry. After a short break, we went back to fishing...
Featherback at Bolgoda

Featherback at Bolgoda

I picked up Naoya san and his friend at their hotel in Colombo early in the morning. On the way to Bolgoda Lake, we talked fishing and Naoya asked me how the condition of the lake was after all the rainy days in Sri Lanka. From my experience, these aren’t the best conditions for Barramundi but they are really good for Featherback. Good news for Naoya, who has never caught one of these fish before. Naoya’s friend joined him at the last minute, he knows fishing but he is not an expert like Naoya and came along mainly to enjoy a day out on the lake. We arrive at Ruskin Island, where ours boats are parked, around 7 am. We take time to have a tea and prepare our tackle before we leave for fishing. Starting at some spots to target Barramundi, nothing comes up so we head on to our Featherback spots. When we arrive we see plenty of them rolling on the surface. Naoya and his friend are surprised to see so many fish. But as usual with Featherback you need a lot of patience and never give up. I advise Naoya to fish with special lures and give one of my favourite lures to his friend to use. After a while, heavy rain comes down. Just after when the rain stops, Naoya’s friend has a bite and lands a nice featherback. He is extremely happy, it’s his first fish caught on lure ! This fish boosts Naoya and I feel him start to concentrate more. I give him some advice about how to animate his lure...
