Jason Tan’s first time in the Andamans

Jason Tan’s first time in the Andamans

Jason, Nick, Kenny and Lee-Heng have all fished with us in Sri Lanka. They did one of the first trips over in Kirinda and then Trincomalee and were more than up to giving the Andaman Islands a try when I asked them to come over. We planned the trip for March this year and since the big fish were about we asked them to come fully armed with the biggest lures they had. It was good to catch up with the group when they got here and as usual all the guys wanted to pop more than jig, if the conditions permitted. The first objective was to get the guys warmed up and into fish as soon as possible and we managed this in short time. However the big fish seem to move from spot to spot so you need to constantly move spots with them and try to intercept them where possible. This we managed to do after a bit of trial and error on this trip, I must admit. We did get the smaller GT’s and raised some nice size dogtooth on topwater, managing to land a couple of smaller ones. Also, the fish we not feeding at the same part of the tide as last week so we had to work harder the first two days to figure things out again. Getting to one of our spots that has produced fantastic results for us this season, I told the guys to get ready the biggest poppers and stick baits and start casting!! Two casts later Jason’s Abalone Hots Keiko stickball got properly smashed and he was...
Hamad and Gang in the Andaman Islands

Hamad and Gang in the Andaman Islands

Hamad, Aziz and Mohammad, who are now on their third trip in the Andaman Islands fishing with us, brought along first timer popper and jigger Abdul Rahman, and Sultan, who is also relatively new to popping and jigging. The guys are booked for Oman in April this year and wanted to get in a bit of GT action prior to the trip. Hamad had been in touch with us on the internet and we had promised him a special trip fishing new spots and areas different from his previous trips. We have had really good trophy sized fish coming up this season in the Andaman Islands and our last week with the Korean group was a big disappointment as we did not get to boat any of the great fish that were hooked. So this time our skippers Kantha and Rama were really eager to get out and try to land a few of the beasts that we know are here. After getting the guys set up and ready with their tackle we went over the plan of action for the week. Everyone was really excited at the prospect of fishing the new areas. We decided to start the trip with a run out to the bank and in the flat conditions we have had recently, it was a pleasant run across. After getting there we were into the fish right away and immediately Aziz got a dogtooth on top-water to set the ball rolling; a good omen!! We popped for a bit across the numerous reefs and landed a few of the usual suspects such as Barracuda and...
Korean Game fishing team in the Andaman Islands

Korean Game fishing team in the Andaman Islands

We have had Korean anglers visiting us for the last two seasons and last year, after their trip, they immediately booked a prime set of dates for this season. We were expecting the same group of anglers, as communication in English is a bit of a challenge, but were in for a bit of a surprise when we saw the group was all new faces and included the Korean Daiwa tackle tester and the Hots tackle tester for Korea. They had a big selection of tackle; a lot of it was brands we had not seen before and some even made up their own lures, as we have also seen with a lot of Japanese anglers. Some of the team were experienced and had fished in Komodo for big GT, while some of the others were on their first GT trip. Being a prime week of the season we expected the action to be hot and that is just what it was. We tried to tell them that there were big GT’s and dogtooth around and that they would need to scale up the hook sizes on the lures and fish heavier drags, but they seemed to favour the tackle selection they had. True to form, the XL GT’s and dogtooth did show up to put on a show and as the saying goes “don’t bring a knife to a gunfight”. We ended up with opened treble hooks, bust offs and lost lures. They did land a few decent fish but is was not even close to what came up and could have been landed. They lost an estimated...
Insane Fishing Week for the Italians

Insane Fishing Week for the Italians

Last season Andrea and Luca were in the Andaman fishing with us and had a great trip, so this season they booked the Rampage with Pietro and Carlo. They arrived a day earlier to avoid any hassle with the permissions on a Sunday arrival and decided to do an extra day’s fishing as well, so we were more than happy to get out on the boat asap. And this is when it all started. On day one we fished one of our closer spots, as we expected the prime spots to fire closer to the new moon. On getting to the spot we had some decent action on topwater, landing some GT in the 18-20 kilo range, with the smaller lures getting hammered. Carlo, whom we shall name “jigging master,” was, at 61 years of age, getting a taste of GT fishing for the first time and wanted to jig as much as he could. We started jigging and the action started non stop till we had to call it a day, with the light jigging really producing on the GT and Dogtooth. The next day we were off with an early start. Pietro’s first cast got slammed by a good GT which he got on board after a good fight, only to find his big Shout Kudako hook opened! Boy, do the GT’s have some brute strength or what?! The guys landed some big barracuda on topwater as well as what looked like small crocodiles and we got a couple of really big hits from some real monsters but they did not fully commit to taking the lure....
