Romeo, Momo, Ko & Kim in the Andamans

Romeo, Momo, Ko & Kim in the Andamans

Last season we had anglers from South Korea land some good fish with us and this year we have more groups from South Korea: Romeo, Momo, Professor Ko and Mr Kim were on this group, here to catch a big Andaman GT. They were fully rigged up with great tackle and ready to go. On the first day we started off jigging the spot with markings of a lot of fish but the fish were not really active, so we decided to move to a deeper popping spot. This spot also did not provide much action so we moved closer inshore and immediately found  action and feeding fish. We had 4 huge strikes, got the fish on, but all four of these came off. Romeo got into a decent fish which stayed hooked and he landed a nice 26kg Andaman GT to finally get some consolation for the group on day 1. The guys were getting used to the casting and jigging and fishing for GTs after long breaks so a couple of fish missed is pretty common during the trip. We left a bit earlier the next day to get out to a further fishing ground and again started the day with some jigging. Today the fish we biting on jig and immediately Professor Ko was into a large Dogtooth on his jig but the fish was too strong and got him into the reef and bust off even though he had his Omoto jigging reel on near full drag. We had continuous action with GT’s, small Dogtooth and some Long nosed Emperors landed. After jigging for a...
The Hammerhead popper Trip

The Hammerhead popper Trip

Clive and his two sons Brendan and Justin travelled all the way from South Africa for their annual trip to tangle with the Andaman GTs in particular and top-water Dogtooth Tuna. They were all super fit and ready to go for long periods with the heavy tackle required to catch the special fish they were after. The trip started with us getting to know their fishing styles and refining their techniques to work better in our conditions. By mid-afternoon the fish were on the feed. We had big GT and dogtooth following right up to the boat but not taking the lures. Finally a nice GT crashed Justin’s popper and the fight was on. Justin handled the fish well to land a nice 30kg Andaman GT setting the tempo for the rest of the trip. The next day we tried a few spots that had been working very well early in the season. Although the fish were around they were not really active on either the popping and jigging spots and all the bites appeared to be tentative only. The guys gave it their best putting in the hard work but the fish did not respond this day and we called the day off to get an early start the next day in a different area. An early start off to a favourite spot saw us get into the fish. As we reached there was continuous action, Brendan had a huge GT crash his popper in the clear water. Everything was so clearly visible: the enormous fish nailed it and took off only for the hooks to pull after...
The Baudry’s & Leon

The Baudry’s & Leon

Our regular French couple Thierry and Ghislaine were back in Sri Lanka for their third trip in Kirinda. Leon from Australia joined the couple for his first GT fishing trip and last fishing trip before the arrival of his twins in February. I was little worried about having two experienced fishermen and a beginner on the same boat, but that trip turned great, Thierry and Ghislaine shared their fishing experience with Leon, giving him advice and encouragement and we all had a lot of fun on board No Limit over the 6 days. I have fished with the Baudry’s a couple of times in a few different locations and each time I have them the weather has been less than perfect! So this time like usual when the Baudry’s arrived in town the clouds closed in and we had rain each day. As usual Ghislaine blamed her husband, who is has developed a “black cat” reputation when it comes to the fishing weather. However as a bit of an exception to the “Baudry’s bad weather” rule the last 3 days were nice with a blue sky and sunshine. To start with the fishing was a little bit slow, but we managed to find activity every day and land some GTs.  Ghislaine caught a nice 20 kg + on popper, Leon caught his first GT ever on popper and believe me after that catch he is well and truly hooked on topwater fishing. We finished the day with a couple of small GTs. Day two we opted to try some jigging, the strong oceanic current and wind didn’t make life...
