Yamada & Sahara at Bolgoda

Yamada & Sahara at Bolgoda

After a great trip last June, where they caught some nice Barramundi and Mangrove Jack, Yamada san and Sahara san scheduled another Bolgoda trip with Gamefishing Asia for December 2015. It was a pleasure to guide these two expert Japanese fishermen on the last trip and I was excited to be guiding them again, especially Sahara san who had lost 2 nice fish on the last day of his previous trip and was out for revenge! When I welcomed the guys around midnight at Colombo airport it felt like a reunion of old friends. We loaded up the gear and set off for Bolgoda Lake, talking fishing, remembering fish lost or missed from the last trip and catching up on other fishing adventures. We arrived late in the night at Bolgoda and set a time of 7am to go fishing which sent everybody to bed to rest for the following day. After breakfast and coffee, the morning of the first day we started out fishing some spots looking to target Barramundi. Sahara’s lure box looked like a mobile tackle shop! He has obviously been doing some shopping since his last visit and had plenty of nice minnows specifically for this trip. I noticed a nice Duel Hardcore Flat Minnow and advised him to start with it. After landing a couple of ladyfish Sahara san has a serious bite close a lily-pad patch and a nice 66 cm Barramundi came to the net after a couple of jumps. Great start!!! They caught some average size mangrove jack and dropped a few Oxeye Tarpon, before we headed back for lunch. After...
The Singapore Boys

The Singapore Boys

Jason Tan and friends were our last group in November. The guys had fished with us previously in Trincomolee and Kirinda so they came well prepared for battle. They were stoked to be back and full of questions about the GT bite… unfortunately I didn’t have many answers! My previous group had the misfortune of fishing some truly abominable green water which had turned the fishing off and I was coming off a 2 day break, Nico was busy with a group who were Jigging more than popping and having such a great time catching Amberjack they hadn’t hit the shallows much so news was pretty scarce! With all this in mind a battle plan was formed to pull a long shift the next day, working a search pattern along the 8 km stretch of Great Bass’s reef, hitting previously productive spots as well as some of the spots we hadn’t fished much. It was a slog but the guys toughed it out. Luckily the water colour had improved dramatically which made all the difference in the world. We had quite a few fish come up and hit the lures but they were some seriously rascally rabbits and we didn’t manage to boat any. This proved to be an unlucky trend for us the whole trip as we had great topwater hits each day for the length of the trip but only managed to convert a small portion of them. After the first day we had a better idea of what to expect so we adjusted our plan accordingly, the oceanic current was running at a massive rate and...
Ben discovers Bolgoda Lake

Ben discovers Bolgoda Lake

Ben is an avid lure fisherman from Australia and comes to Colombo regularly for business. He had a weekend to spend in Sri Lanka and contacted us for a day fishing trip. He was very interesting in going after GTs in Kirinda, but it was little bit far for just a weekend so he chose to fish at Bolgoda Lake. I picked up Ben from his hotel in Colombo at 11 am and we drove to Bolgoda Lake. When we arrived at the Ruskin Island ferry I could see the surprise in Ben’s eyes. What I love, right from when I first visited Bolgoda Lake is the wildlife and birds that you get to see within an hour’s drive from Colombo’s busy city center. Ben was very surprised to see monkeys, water monitor, crocodile, eagles and kingfisher in a very beautiful landscape so close to the Sri Lankan capital city. When we arrived at our boutique hotel, Bayou of Bolgoda, the chef had prepared some very good club sandwiches & French fries (chips). A quick lunch and we are ready to go fishing. Ben was so excited and after a couple of cast he had a bite and a golden barramundi jump. Ben is an experienced fisherman but it was his first « jumping fish » and he didn’t know he needed to put the rod tip down when the fish jump and sadly lost the fish. At the next spot he caught a ladyfish and missed a bite from what I think was a mangrove jack. At the end of the evening, we tried on one of our favourite spots for...
Alex & Jeremy

Alex & Jeremy

Alex Scott last fished with us in January 2015 and is now completely addicted to popper and jig fishing, Alex was back for a second round to the Andaman Islands with mate Jeremy who has never tried his hand at GT and saltwater popping and jigging The first day we had to show and coach Jeremy in casting and working the lures so we started off slowly. Alex gave him a FC Labo sinking stickbait to use which required very little working (these FC Labo stickbaits work very well and have been catching lots of fish here) Alex was eager to cast after all the gym work he had put in after his first trip and had the Fisherman Monster travel rod with him. This is the first time I have physically seen the rod and as a travel rod it’s really THE product to have if you can get your hands on it. The next day we headed to one of our favourite spots which did not disappoint once we located the fish, Alex had two huge fish which smashed his lures only for one to have the hook pull after ripping off at least 50 meters of line and the other to reef him. Such is GT fishing so when you do land a big GT, it is a moment to savour. The variety of species did not disappoint though with twin spot snapper and smaller GTs, sharks and grouper playing ball. The wind picked up making us fish in the shelter of the lee but this did not turn the bite off. We had very good...
The French buddies

The French buddies

Damien, Pierre and Gilles booked a 5 days fishing trip in Kirinda to target GTs on popper. They are experienced fishermen and have traveled to different fishing destinations, but they hadn’t had the opportunity to challenge a big GT on popper. A few days before their arrival, I received a call from Damien, he wanted to know about the conditions and the fishing. At that time I didn’t really have good news to give him… The water was green like a veg soup and was making the fish very difficult to catch. But I told him I was confident for their trip, for sure conditions and fishing would not stay like this for long. They arrived in Kirinda on the 20th and had a day off on the 21st to prepare their tackle and have a rest after their long travel from France. The 22nd was the first day of fishing & we started by trying popping on the reef. The water colour was much better, we saw some schools of bait on the surface, but there were no GT around. Then we decide to try our jigging spots. On the first spot we immediately found fish and they caught a couple of Goldspot trevally. Next drifts saw more Goldspot and some nice Gt’s being caught. After lunch we decide to try one of our new jigging spots which is little bit deeper and where we have caught Amberjack before. The Garmin showed plenty of marks on the screen. One of the most incredible jigging action session I have ever seen in Kirinda started immediately after the guys dropped their jigs....
