Jigging in Trincomalee – Feb 2015

Jigging in Trincomalee – Feb 2015

When our Italian Anglers arrived in Trincomalee, forecast and water conditions weren’t really ideal for a dream fishing trip… But one of the guys said to us: “Let’s see what happens on sea, the fish haven’t disappeared, we just have to find them!!” We like a positive attitude, it goes a long way in making the trip a pleasant experience for everyone. We started on our popping spots, but the water was really green and muddy, due to the last rainy days… very difficult conditions to manage GTs coming to the surface. This year’s rainfall has been off the record and an indication of changing weather patterns across the world. To keep the positive attitude going we think that this means next year conditions are going to be perfect! Simone had the only bite of the trip on popper and landed a decent 15 kg GT Rod: Hot’s Gipang Tide Lez GT77XH | Reel: Shimano Stella 18000 SW | Lure: Patriot Design Big Cup 170. Then the second day, we decided to try on our jigging spots and we found a big ball of bait and predators around. The trip which hadn’t got off to a great start was now getting much, much better. This was a trip for Jigging with good action and even a quadruple hook up!!! These are some of the beauties we caught: Malabar Trevally African Pompano Horse Eye Jack Some Yellow Fin Tuna And some nice GTs… The big GTs were caught with Rod: Maria Steady Jigging 70 | Reel: Shimano Stella 18000 SW | Jig: Maria Metal Flicker 200 g   And a special...
GetAway Swedes in Kirinda

GetAway Swedes in Kirinda

In January 2015 we had 6 Swedish anglers fish with us for 6 days. Ake, Mathias, Mikael, Per, Per & Sten arrived in Kirinda. Having fished around the world they were keen to try their luck in Sri Lankan waters. Popping for GT in Sri Lanka is a bit different from most other destinations as there are no reefs on the surface to fish against. This makes Kirinda a perfect destination for big fish as they tend to like the deeper water more. Every day on a trip is unique giving each angler a different taste of what Kirinda & Sri Lanka have to offer. Day 1 | Rampageous A perfect first day for Mathias, Åke and Sten, the group of Swedes aboard our 31 foot boat “Rampageous”. The guys started the morning with a session of jigging where they saw some beautiful echoes on the Garmin even though the water clarity was quite low due to heavy rain during the past monsoon season. They decide to start their trip with some jigging, which can be a very productive method and their first try at jigging in Sri Lanka, results in a hard fighting Amberjack of about 7kg. After lunch time they decided to go popping as they had brought an array of excellent big poppers such as Hammer Head and Cubera. Immediately they had good activity and even though the watercolor was a bit more green than optimal, they had 15 bites and could manage 8 fish in the boat in just a few hours. The Highlight of the day was when Sten, hooked a big GT very close to the boat. The fish went off for a long run and gave Sten a fight for several long minutes....
A GT workout in the Andamans – Jan 2015

A GT workout in the Andamans – Jan 2015

In January 2015 we had the winners of our “Andaman Giveaway” fish with us in the Andaman Islands. Dutch angler Volkmar was the lucky winner selected at random and brought along his buddy Hendrik for the trip of a lifetime. They arrived the day before the fishing was to start in Port Blair after a long flight from their home country of Holland. We were at the airport to receive them and had them spend the day at our guesthouse over looking the sea, discussing various strategies we would use over the next five days of fishing. After a hearty meal prepared by our cook we started to get their tackle ready before we lost natural light. After an early breakfast, we walked down to the boat located 5 minutes from the guesthouse. The wind was blowing from the North East as we headed out of the harbor and proceeded to our first spot of the day. We had chosen to fish South on the first day as the fishing was not very far away and it was more of a warm up day. We reached a very fishy outcrop that had schools of baitfish and a ripping current. Perfect conditions for GT to be in the area. Hendrik opened his account with a large Rainbow Runner that thought it would make a meal of his popper. As we moved on to an off shore reef we came across a local fishing boat that had engine trouble. The fishermen were waving at us and looked relieved when we pulled up alongside them. We then spent the next half hour...
A couple from Alaska try fly fishing at Bolgoda Lake

A couple from Alaska try fly fishing at Bolgoda Lake

Brad and Melissa arrived at Bayou of Bolgoda on 08 February 2015 to try out fly fishing at our Lake Fishing destination in Sri Lanka. Day 1: Fishing the last two hours of daylight 2 fish for 3 bites. Clients, Brad and Melissa from Alaska arrived in the afternoon and wanted to fish the two last hours of daylight. It was quite windy so the fishing was done in a small bay where they managed two small GT on their fly fishing equipment before it was completely dark. They were excited to try the fly fishing on the lake as they had very light tackle, with a weight of just 4-5 weight on each rod. They had also brought one sinking line and one floating to be able to try all different depths, getting their thin 5lb leaders where they wanted them. Day 2: Crocodiles and adapting fishing to Bolgoda’s environs 4 fish for 14 bites. The day started early at 05.30 with a flat surface and spotting many big crocodiles on the surface very close to the boat. The first fish were a couple of nice Mangrove Jacks around 35cm close to the prawn traps, with a strong current keeping the cloudy water at a steady pace. We also managed to hook a small Tarpon in amongst the small floating islands of vegetation where the fish seek refuge. The tarpon took on a small bright streamer on the fly fishing equipment, which was the method of choice for the Alaskan couple. The evening brought rain, but they managed a fun fishing with streamers for jumping Giant Herring just...
